تأسست الجامعة في عام 1988 على يد باشه شهير أوغور بعد موافقة الجمعية الوطنية التركية، لتصبح واحدة من أفضل 500 جامعة حول العالم.

تنتشر الجامعة في عدد من الدول فلديها فرع في كل من: واشنطن في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية – تورينتو في كندا – برلين في ألمانيا بالإضافة إلى فروع أخرى تنتشر في شمال قبرص التركية و إيطاليا و الصين، و لدى الجامعة اتفاقيات تعاون مع الكثير من جامعات حول العالم مثل: جامعة نيويورك – جامعة هارفرد – جامعة ستانفورد – جامعة برلين التقنية.

تضم جامعة باهجة شهير 9 كليات و مدرسة عليا للتعليم المهني، و تعد الجامعة صاحبة السبق في تركيا في تطبيق مشروع Coop القائم على التعاون بين الجامعة و سوق العم، مما يسمح للطالب بفرصة معايشة التجربة العملية بينما هو لا يزال في سنوات الدراسة الجامعية و لدى الجامعة اتفاقية تعاون مع ما يقارب 800 مصنع داخل تركيا و خارجها.

تمتلك الجامعة 3 فروع داخل مدينة إسطنبول وتوفر سكن طلابي للراغبين، بقدرة استيعابية تصل لـ 300 طالب وتمتلك الجامعة مكتبة بحثية فيحصل منها حوالي 12 الف طالب وطالبة من الأتراك و الأجانب و تضم هذه الكتبة في طياتها 145 الف كتاب و مرجع أكاديمي.
